In our last game the boys piled on 206 runs and rolled the opposition for half of that score. A fantastic effort and well deserved. This week we hosted Broadbeach at home for day one of our second last match of the season. We won the toss and sent Broadbeach in to bat. Joel bowled their opening batsman with the second delivery of the day and we thought we were going to carry the momentum through their order. But alas, whilst Joel bowled the remainder of his overs exceptionally well, he was let down by a very lack lustre team performance in the field. All the boys were eager when called on to bowl but only Sam Whitelock and Fletcher Roberts seemed to maintain the same level of enthusiasm and positive encouragement in the field.
Broadbeach finished at 219 for the loss of 7 wickets. It was very hot and humid and our ‘pink’ brigade seemed a very emotional lot by the end of the 50 overs. Despite some protests from a fatigued section of the team we commenced our innings with twenty minutes left in the mornings play. Riley Fletcher and Luke were given the opportunity to open and strode to the wicket where they intended to stay until stumps. Unfortunately both openers went quickly as did the always eager Riley Dunn, who fell to a great catch. We are 3 for 2 after four overs.
Thanks to Darren (Joels dad) for his scoring and Stevens dad for helping out with umpiring and retrieving boundary markers. Much appreciated.
Training this week will focus on attitude and the way we interact with each other. It is important to remember that our first priority is having fun and that a misfield or dropped catch (of which we had plenty) is simply just that. It is more about encouraging the fieldsman to improve on his next effort rather than let fly with a potentially damaging remark. We have a fantastic team with unlimited potential and each and every member will be afforded even opportunities regardless of the state of any particular game or the misguided opinion of any individual. ‘Somebody take my soapbox away’.
