Orange - Match Report - 29 Jan

We played Palm Beach/Currumbin at Mallawa Road. Ian Coyne was in charge and won the toss and batted.

Our best opening partnership of the season between Coyne and Graham Reynolds put on 41 before a good piece of fielding saw Coyne run out. We put together a score of 140 which was pretty good given difficult batting conditions. The wind was quite severe and caused the ball to dip a lot so all in all the team was happy with the score. Main contributors were Les Daley (who had been moved down from opener) and obviously enjoyed facing the older ball with a fine 36, Darren Williams in his first game of the season 26, Graham 26 and Coyne 21.

Opening bowlers Rory and Amit did a great job with Rory bowling out his 7 overs to finish with 3/29. We were very much in the ascendancy at the 17 over break with Palmie 5/69. A good fight back from them saw them get back into the game. Bowling the last few overs were Darren Williams and after one wayward over fought back with some very tight bowling and Coyne. At the start of the last over Palmie needed 8 runs to win and we needed 1 wicket. Success with the 2nd ball with a great catch by Amit. Actually any catch that Amit takes is great and he took 2. Bowling figures were Darren 2/29, Amit 1/17, Jim Griffin 1/20, Priyal 2/17and Coyne 1/21.

Great win by 5th Grade Orange.

Cricket Legend Sam Loxton passes away

We are very sad to report that Australian Cricket legend and club stalwart Sam Loxton has passed away on Saturday morning.

Sam was a member of the 1948 "Invincibles", the undefeated Australian cricket side that toured Engand in that year.  He played 12 tests for Australia, including scoring 101 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1949 for his only Test hundred amongst his 554 Test runs at 36.93.  He was a Test selector between 1972 and 1981, and also was involved in politics.

Loxton also played 41 VFL matches for St Kilda, kicking 114 goals before switching to cricket in 1946.

An honourary member of our club, Sam was warmly welcomed down at the club, and took great pride in watching the Gold Coast Cricket games on Sam Loxton Oval from "Sammy's Corner".  He was a great participant in Gold Coast Cricket, umpiring and being involved throughout the years, and even up until the last few months of his life he was still able to be seen at the club.

Last year Runaway Bay welcomed sam as an honorary life member, and together with Southport Labrador started playing for the Sam Loxton Shield, an award given to the winner of the premier grade fixture between the two clubs - something that will no doubt last for many years to come in Sam's honour

Farewell Details

Relatives and friends of the late Samuel Loxton OBE are warmly invited to attend Prayers of Christian farewell, to be held in the chapel of St Alban the Martyr, The South port School, Winchester Street south port Gold Coast on Friday the 9th of December, 2011 commencing at 2pm.
