Match Report - Round 4

A very different side headed to Bartercard Oval at Mudgeeraba to take on the reigning premiers, and put in a solid effort. Mudgee got off to a good start at 0/70, but after clawing back with a few cheap wickets we had them on the ropes at 5/108. A strong partnership saw them declare at 6/187 off 65 overs. Greenie bowled well for 2/35 off 21 overs, Dave Saunders put in for1/69 off 19 and Trav bowled well for 1/56 off 18 overs.

Mudgee expected us to fold to them, however we had different ideas, finishing a strong late afternoon session at 1/25. Heading into day 2, and needing a further 160 runs to pull off a remarkable victory, the day started well with a solid partnership from night watchman Dave Saunders (18) and super sub Stingers (40) had us looking good at 3/90. However negative tactics from Mudgee by stacking the offside and bowling wide of off stump saw things level out again, and apart from an unbeaten 19 from Trav and a quick 10 from Nathan Finney, we fell 50 runs short being bowled out for 137.

Match Report - Round 3

Taking on Alberton at home, our first graders were rolled in the first innings for 106, with Matty Robertson (31 not out) and Adam Castle (26) leading the way. Alberton were too good with the bat, finishing day 1 on 0/56, and eventually reaching 6/212 declared. Pick of the bowlers were Geoff Griffin (2/44) and Darren Greene (2/65).

After going down on first innings and trailing by 106, all our boys just needed to bat the day out to save an outright loss. And it started promising, with Jay Hanrahan and Geoff Griffin hitting stable innings of 21 and 22 not out respectively. At the end of the day though, Alberton were simply too strong, taking the last 6 wickets for 10 runs, bowling us out for 73.

Match Report - Round 2

Under the leadership of Trent “Stingers” Ray we headed to Angove to meet Queens.

After the ground being submerged in the first week, the team got into a one day game, and struggled through tough going on a tough pitch. Batting first, we managed 9/106 off 40 overs, with Scott Morris top scoring on 19, supported by Adam Castle (16), Geoff Griffin (15), Matty Robertson (12) and a cameo from Under 11 Coach John Harrison after being called up at late notice (10).

Defending a small total was never going to be easy, and it was made even tougher when Dave Saunders broke down with a leg injury in the second over of the innings, and with Jay Hanrahan picking up a toe injury while batting. In the end Queens did their job easily, making the runs with 17 overs to go, Darran Green starring with the ball, taking the only 2 wickets of the innings with 2/29 off 7 overs.

Cricket Legend Sam Loxton passes away

We are very sad to report that Australian Cricket legend and club stalwart Sam Loxton has passed away on Saturday morning.

Sam was a member of the 1948 "Invincibles", the undefeated Australian cricket side that toured Engand in that year.  He played 12 tests for Australia, including scoring 101 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1949 for his only Test hundred amongst his 554 Test runs at 36.93.  He was a Test selector between 1972 and 1981, and also was involved in politics.

Loxton also played 41 VFL matches for St Kilda, kicking 114 goals before switching to cricket in 1946.

An honourary member of our club, Sam was warmly welcomed down at the club, and took great pride in watching the Gold Coast Cricket games on Sam Loxton Oval from "Sammy's Corner".  He was a great participant in Gold Coast Cricket, umpiring and being involved throughout the years, and even up until the last few months of his life he was still able to be seen at the club.

Last year Runaway Bay welcomed sam as an honorary life member, and together with Southport Labrador started playing for the Sam Loxton Shield, an award given to the winner of the premier grade fixture between the two clubs - something that will no doubt last for many years to come in Sam's honour

Farewell Details

Relatives and friends of the late Samuel Loxton OBE are warmly invited to attend Prayers of Christian farewell, to be held in the chapel of St Alban the Martyr, The South port School, Winchester Street south port Gold Coast on Friday the 9th of December, 2011 commencing at 2pm.
