Match Report - Round 4

After a strong showing against Alberton last week, we were confident heading into a home game against Coomera. Maysie sent the Crocs in to bowl and the results were immediate, with Mick Graham (4/16 off 10) and Jase Plummer (4/5 off 7) each taking wickets. Coomera had 3 scores over 10 (including Sundries) to finish the innings at 110 off just 51 overs.

Having roughly 20 overs to finish the day, we started shakily, losing early wickets and ending up at 4/45 at stumps. Day 2 however was a different story, with newcomer Paul Hilder and Dan Nordstrom putting together a solid partnership of 58 to put us right back in the game at 4/100. Things then turned again, with the Crocs taking 4/0 including a hat trick to put us in strife again at 8/100, with one batsman down (Lee Barnett had not yet finished work). Plummer and Aaron McKeown dug in and hit the winnings runs plus a few, Aaron finishing on an unbeaten 15 as the innings closed at 127.

Sending Coomera back in again, the boys were looking for a cheeky outright and it started well with Greenie and Joe Tolman taking early wickets to have then 2/5. However after a solid partnership, the game fizzled out as those who didn’t usually bowl had a trundle, including a surprise 2/9 off 3 overs from Adam Molina.

2 wins in a row for the boys, and they’re looking good coming up to the Christmas period.

Match Report - Round 3

Our second graders headed north to Alberton, and on a sticky pitch with sand bunker style outfields, batted first. It turned out to be a good decision, with Daniel Cadman and Luke Seiter putting on 56 for the second wicket. A well worked 53 to Lee Barnett, 55 to Josh Benney and 36 to Ben Pearce lead the Bay to a imposing first innings tot al of 262 of 73 overs.

Defending a huge total, the boys got off to a steady start, taking the first wicket for 7 runs, however they needed to wait some time before the next wicket. A 112 run partnership from Alberton saw them claw back, however in the end our boys were too strong, bowling Alberton out for 244 and winning by 22. Well done to Nathan Finney (4/46 off 21) and Jason Plummer (2/26 off 16) leading the way with the ball.

A well worked win for our boys, leaving them in good stead for the rest of the season.

Match Report - Round 2

Playing against on Queens at Sam Loxton Oval, we lost the toss and bowled on a windy weekend at the Bay. Queens made the most of it, batting all day and hitting 2/221 their 75 overs. The results could have been better for our boys, with a few tough chances going down throughout the day, but in the end a tough day. Standout performances include Michael Graham, bowling really well, 1/26 off 14 overs, and Aaron McKeown picking up the other wicket with 1/32 off 13 overs.

Batting this week, we needed 3 an over to win the game. We started disastrously, losing Scotty Mulligan for 2 early on, and then Daniel Goldsmith not too long after. Daniel Cadman steadied the ship hitting 32, but teetering at 4/67, it wasn’t looking good. Another couple of cheap wickets saw our boys heading towards defeat at 7/97, however 2 hard working innings from Luke Seiter (45) and Daniel Nordstrom (27 not out) gave a little bit of hope, but after time ran out and so did the wickets, Runaway Bay going down in the end by 75 runs.

Cricket Legend Sam Loxton passes away

We are very sad to report that Australian Cricket legend and club stalwart Sam Loxton has passed away on Saturday morning.

Sam was a member of the 1948 "Invincibles", the undefeated Australian cricket side that toured Engand in that year.  He played 12 tests for Australia, including scoring 101 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1949 for his only Test hundred amongst his 554 Test runs at 36.93.  He was a Test selector between 1972 and 1981, and also was involved in politics.

Loxton also played 41 VFL matches for St Kilda, kicking 114 goals before switching to cricket in 1946.

An honourary member of our club, Sam was warmly welcomed down at the club, and took great pride in watching the Gold Coast Cricket games on Sam Loxton Oval from "Sammy's Corner".  He was a great participant in Gold Coast Cricket, umpiring and being involved throughout the years, and even up until the last few months of his life he was still able to be seen at the club.

Last year Runaway Bay welcomed sam as an honorary life member, and together with Southport Labrador started playing for the Sam Loxton Shield, an award given to the winner of the premier grade fixture between the two clubs - something that will no doubt last for many years to come in Sam's honour

Farewell Details

Relatives and friends of the late Samuel Loxton OBE are warmly invited to attend Prayers of Christian farewell, to be held in the chapel of St Alban the Martyr, The South port School, Winchester Street south port Gold Coast on Friday the 9th of December, 2011 commencing at 2pm.
